History of Suriya Namaskar in Hatha Yoga
The asana flow sequence or vinyasa known as Sūryanamaskāra literally means &ldquo;salutation to the sun&rdquo; (Surya = sun, namaskara= salutation). Suryanamaskar in many forms been part of Hindu day-to-day life and an important part of Hatha Yoga Traditions like Natha, Giri, Vyasa, and various Tantra traditions. Dr. Swami Gitananda Giriji has compiled the most comprehensive work on any form of Hatha Yoga. This work has been followed and carried forward by Ammaji Meenakshi Devi and Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani. Dr. Ananda has written the most scientific and detailed book on many variations of Suriya Namaskars in Gitananda Tradition. According to Swamiji Gitananda, this tradition is more than 2000 years old and follows Hatha Yoga, Tantra, Mantra, Yantra, and Raja or Ashtanga Yoga in its most scientific, therapeutic, applied, and spiritual approach.
