We all know that we need calcium for strong bones and teeth, to prevent osteoporosis, to keep the heart muscles and nerves functioning well, and even to prevent blood clotting. What most of us do not know is that for calcium to do its work, vitamin D must pitch in too.
The crucial calcium-vitamin-D connection is a medically well-established fact, though few people know of it. It is especially important for post-menopausal women as they are particularly vulnerable to osteoporosis and osteomalacia (softening of the bones). This information is also crucial for infants and growing children because deficiency of calcium or vitamin D may cause deformed bones and rickets. Vitamin D is also instrumental in controlling the movement of calcium between bone and blood and vice-versa.
