Can tension delay or hinder your baby's birth?

Yes and no.

Yes, Without skills, you do not know how to 'soften' inside your pelvis to create mobility and space for your baby. Nor do you know any of the 4 types of body tensions that might hinder your baby's birth. Learn more about this in the lesson on Prepare Your Pregnant Body.

No, If you have plenty of space inside your pelvis and your baby fits easily through your pelvis you can be very tense and birth will still clip along even if you lack skills. Learn more in Prepare Your Pregnant Body.

Your baby is a big object opening up then coming down, through and out of your body/container. If you do not know your body, then you are going into birth partially blind. If you do not know how to soften inside then you might unintentionally hinder your baby's birth.

The Birthing Better fathers and mothers who developed these skills in the early 1970s did two things:

  • Create skills to cope better in birth so we don't 'suffer' from the naturally occurring pain of labor.
  • Prepare our pregnant body to birth our baby because a delay in the 1st and 2nd Stage will include more medical assessments, monitoring, and procedures. Let's put this together.

If you do not cope well and if your labor is long, the medical profession does not want you to suffer, they will use more medical interventions. If your baby does not move down, though, and out your birthing body in a reasonable amount of time, they will use more medical interventions.

'They' (birth providers) are not out to get you! They are doing their best, with their skills, to prevent or reduce suffering or risks.

Our individual responsibility is simple. Self-learn birth and birth-coaching skills for your baby's birth because you are the parent and you're doing an activity that is best done by you using skills.
