DESCRIPTION:
Everyone knows about birth breathing techniques. Without a doubt, birth breathing techniques are the most know set of birth skills. We breathe all the time.
In the 1960s-70s in the US and other modern countries, the first-ever childbirth preparation classes focused heaps on breathing techniques. Then in the mid1970s, the Natural Birth Movement and famous authors made comments such as: 'We breathe all the time, you'll know how to breathe in labor'.
I sound as though I'm against the Natural Birth Movement. Actually, I've been frustrated for 50 years because birth happens to 100% of pregnant women and not just those who choose, want, or have a natural birth and no one speaks for 100% of pregnant women. Our New Zealand NGO, Common Knowledge Trust, tries to speak for all of us by acknowledging that giving birth is an activity 100% of pregnant women will do and we need skills to do that activity the best we can.
The first birth breathing techniques worked for some and not for others....
