Powerful tools to solve mysteries. I really like this section. Because tools are incredibly important in making great decisions and doing successful projects. These are some of the very top tools that I've selected for this section. I brought powerful tools to solve mysteries into two different lessons. Because there's so much rich information here I didn't want any type of information overload.

So let's get started. solving a mystery using critical thinking has two meanings, becoming an expert in the field and using critical thinking tools to solve a problem or discover how something works. First, experts who have solved the mystery of their field. An expert in a field is someone who has a deep and broad knowledge about his or her chosen profession. In other words, he or she is someone who has solved the mystery of that field. One of the elements to becoming an expert is Embracing and internalizing a field of expertise.

Extensive study, practice, observation and analysis are some of the critical thinking skills that a person applies to become an expert. years sometimes decades, makes a seasoned expert in an area. And individual who solves a mystery over profession can frequently replicate those efforts over and over again. Let's look at a couple of examples of prominent people who've solved the mystery of their profession. First, Warren Buffett, he solved the mystery of investing. He success at making money by investing in undervalued companies, and then selling them off for large gains is legendary.

It earned him the nickname oracle of Omaha. Warren Buffett was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Next, Steve Wozniak was responsible for much of the early success of the Apple Computer. He solved the mystery of making early home computers simple for example, He found a way on the apple to to allow the video display and microprocessor to share the same memory. He also developed a floppy disk controller that used only a fourth of the integrated circuits used by other controllers at the time. solving the mystery of a profession has been explained for two reasons.

First, to show the power of critical thinking when it is applied effectively to a field of expertise. And second, critical thinking skills will be used later in the course, to help you become even more of an expert in your field if you're already in something that you like, already choose something new to go into. Okay, now we're going to get into how to solve mysteries using critical thinking. The scientific method, it is arguably one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful methodology and critical thinking for discovering how things work. For centuries, scientists, engineers, mathematicians and others. Have you Use the scientific method to advance the human knowledge base.

The scientific method uses hypothesis prediction, controlled experiment observation, and comes up with possible solutions. For example, Marie Curie use a scientific method to help pioneer the discovery of radioactivity. radium is considered as the second most important chemical element, oxygen being the first and of course, rightfully so. Curie also helped provide the groundwork for nuclear medicine and discovery of the structure of the atom. Scientists learn from the experience of those before them. In other words, they stand on the shoulders of the people who worked in the area before them.

If a new hypothesis theory is found to be more accurate than the previous one, then the new theory becomes the accepted norm. scientists who came up with the previous theory isn't thought of less, he or she is thought of as having helped other scientists to learn the better explanation on how the world works. To the true scientists The goal is to eliminate Eagle politics and pride in order to discover the ultimate Secrets of the Universe. For example, Sir Isaac Newton's explanation of the effects of gravity was accepted as truth until Albert Einstein improved upon Newton's theory, and also explained why gravity works the way it does. Einstein's theory of gravity is still the accepted theory for large objects. Einstein used Newton's groundwork for the starting point parados principle, the 8020 rule.

This is absolutely one of my favorite tools. It saves enormous amounts of time, energy and money. And I use it all the time. Let me tell you a little bit about where this came from. In the late 1800s, and Italian economist named vilfredo Pareto was studying the distribution of wealth in European countries, he discovered a predictable imbalance in the distribution of wealth. He found that approximately 80% of the wealth was controlled by 20% of the population.

This was later known as parados principle. It is also called the 8020 rule. The 8020 rule is an observable natural phenomenon. It covers many scenarios in life, which 80% of the results comes from 20% of the inputs. There is a beauty and eloquence to life that repeats itself over and over again. The 8020 rule is one of those rules of thumb that reflects human nature and how the world operates.

For example, 80% of the work is done at a company by 20% of the people. 80% of the people who fly will travel with 20% of the airlines These statements are clearly not exact, but they can be made without a great deal of research and serve as useful guidelines when making general assumptions, or when trying to get a feel for how things work. Why does the 8020 rule work so? Well? The answer is pretty straightforward. 20% of the people nature products and systems stand out from the rest.

Beyond that explanation would probably take many years of research and a PhD dissertation thrown in for good measure. The results probably wouldn't give much of a better explanation. TAs can frequently be overwhelming. It is easy to flounder if you don't know where to start. The beauty and power of the 8020 rule is that it can frequently be used to help you determine where to begin. We are inundated today with information information overload so they say this one tool will help you incredibly When you're working on a project or objective, always ask yourself the question, Where should I put most of my energies to give me 80% of the desired results?

What do you have questions? using what if questions is a way of applying thought experiments to identify potential problems before they occur? Not after? It's very proactive? With this knowledge, you can choose to prepare for different types of scenarios. For example, before you buy a car, you may want to ask yourself certain questions.

What if I can't make the payments? What if the car doesn't meet my standards? Can I take it back? What if I get into an accident with a car protect me and or my family from serious injury? By using what if scenarios, it opens the mind to wide array of themes to review and assess, then if this scenario happens, you will be more prepared than if you never Thought about the outcome of your actions in the first place. An excellent example of the power of what if questions is provided in the book carrying the fire and astronauts journey by Michael Collins.

Michael Collins was a Command Module Pilot of the Apollo 11 mission. That was the first mission to the moon that Landon Collins writes. Thus, as in the case of much astronaut training, the information has never really been needed, but nonetheless was prudent to try to prepare people for the many variations upon the expected theme as possible. I think this has been one of NASA's great strengths in the conduct of Gemini, and even more so the Apollo series. large groups of capable men have sat for years around conference tables with the engineering schematic drawings and ask themselves what happens if In summary, what if questions are a powerful critical thinking tool for you if you want to be proactive instead of reactive? asking what if questions when doing a project can help you identify potential problems early enough.

So many can be minimized or eliminated before they occur not after. Thanks for watching.
