Before leaving this section, we need to cover one more important topic. It is called the Socratic method. The Socratic method has been used for centuries by teachers to help self teach students. It is a powerful teaching method that helps students learn to self discovery. The fifth century philosopher Socrates created it. To use this method a teacher asks probing questions to help students discover the answer to their questions for themselves, rather than being told the answer.
This teaching method is effective because it encourages student involvement, and involvement encourages powerful engagement. The Socratic method causes the student to think through the question asked and form a response based on logic, reason and common sense, which are cornerstones of critical thinking. Also, Student Involvement dramatically improves the retention rate the material, we all learn best when we're involved. The Socratic method works equally well outside By the classroom for at least two significant reasons. Number one, assisting others to discover the answer to their questions is a powerful communications tool. When you help someone answer their own question, it is much more connecting than being told the answer.
Number two, the Socratic method is really what this chapter is all about. However, instead of asking probing questions of others, you're asking probing questions of yourself. Thanks for watching.
