DESCRIPTION: Mechanisms of disease: Pathology

Massage, other forms of soft tissue bodywork, exercise, and movement therapies focus on maintaining a healthy balanced state of physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being known as homeostasis. As discussed previously, health results from the effective adaptation of an organism to change. When a disease process disturbs homeostasis, a variety of feedback mechanisms usually attempts to return the body to health. Disease occurs when the demand to adapt exceeds the body's ability to do so, and imbalance results. In acute conditions, the body recovers its homeostatic balance within the normal healing cycle. In chronic diseases, the normal state of balance may never be restored.
