DESCRIPTION: Functions
Biomechanics pg 489

is science concerned with the internal and external forces acting on the human body and the effects produced by these forces? Movement is a fundamental characteristic of human behavior and is accomplished by the contraction of skeletal muscles acting within a system of levers and pulleys formed by bones, tendons, and ligaments that network into the unified tensegrity system of the body.
Because a variety of forces may act on the human body, the massage therapist must have a basic understanding of biomechanical principles. Understanding these principles helps us in assessing and observing the body and in clinical reasoning methods used to develop treatment plans.
An understanding of biomechanics includes:

Application of the mechanical principles in the study of living organisms.
The science of movement of a living body, including how muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments work together to produce movement.
The study of mechanical principles and...
