Mechanics of Breathing
During the moments before we take a breath, the pressure insidethe lungs and outside the body is equal, whereas the pressureinside the pleural space is slightly lower. When we begin to inhale,the external intercostal muscles between the ribs contract, liftingthe lower ribs up and out. This creates a vacuum that expandsthe lungs, causing the pressure inside the lungs to decrease. Thediaphragm moves down, increasing the volume of the pleuralcavities and decreasing lung pressure even more. Elastic fibersin the alveolar walls stretch, permitting expansion of the air sacs.The lungs draw in air until the pressure is equal again.Exhalation mainly results from elastic recoil of the alveoli.Additionally, as we exhale, the pressure inside the pleural cav-ity increases; the external intercostals, diaphragm, and alveo-lar walls relax; the volume inside the lungs decreases; and thepressure in the lungs increases until it again equals...
