DESCRIPTION: Bones of the axial Skeleton
The axial skeleton makes up the central and essential structures of the body. The surrecures contain vital organs and provide protection. For example, the skull contains the brain, the vertebral column houses and protects the spinal cord, and the ribs contain and prodigy the heart and lungs.

Infant skull
In the skull of an infant, bone formation is incomplete in some areas; these soft spots are called fontanelles. Found between the cranial bones, fontanelles are formed from very dense connective tissue, which is replaced with bone as the infant grows. The fontanelles allow for compression of the skull as the infant travels through the birth canal and for expansion of the skull as the brain grows. The fontanelles close when the child is 18 to 24 months old.
