Hello, in this video, I am going to show you how to pass a function argument by reference. And if you don't know what passing function arguments is highly recommend that you go and check out that video and I can learn how to do that. And it's just essentially allows you to pass in values and variables, etc, to a function that could be used inside the function. Okay, so what we could do is I'm actually, I'm going to simplify this a bit. And I'm also going to do this. That will be for analysis keep it like this.

Yeah, they'll be fine. Actually, not all that great new things. And so Colombian multiplayer, multiplayer, multiplayer. And what we'll do is create a variable so this is going to be called num. So find this value of nine We're going to pass this in a number. And here, we're gonna click on rename this one.

Here, what we are going to say is dollar number one, you basically multiply that by itself equals itself times by itself. And I'm going to print out number four, let's see what we get. So we get the value nine. So why do we get the value nine even though we passed it in is because this is passing function arguments by value, we haven't done it by reference here. So by value, when we do this, all this does is say, get the value from this variable, which happened to be nine, pass it in. And this is a local variable.

So this can only be used with inside of this function. So to actually you know, For example, use this, we would have to put we'd have to echo it out. So number one, for example, and there we go. So you get a T one. But watch what happens. If I put an ampersand here, we get 81.

And what if I replace that with a 10 you get 100. And the reason is, with an ampersand there is not actually expecting a value is expected, expecting a reference to a variable. So it will get it gets dollar number. And when you call this function, it says, Don't give me the value Give me the location that this variable is stored in memory. And so when we do dollar num one equals itself By itself is actually replacing not this local variable with modifying this. Instead, if I did other No, he did equals nine, we'll get nine printed out because that modifies the original value.

So that's the difference between passing function arguments normally, which is by value, and passing function arguments by reference. So this, you know, requires a variable. So if I put eight here, for example, we get an error because only variables can be passed by reference, if you can just pass a hard coded value by reference because the original thing cannot be dereferenced aka can't find the memory and you can't modify it.
