Time Signatures
A time signature is a symbol written at the beginning of a piece of music to indicate the number of beats in a bar. It comprises of two numbers: the number at the top, and the number at the bottom.
This is a typical time signature:

Take note that time signatures are written after the clef and key signature, and only appear at the beginning of a piece of music, not on every stave.
For your Grade 1 ABRSM Theory Exam, you only need 3-time signatures, and they are:

The Top Number
The top number tells us how many beats we need to count in each complete bar. That is, it signifies the number of beats in a bar. The top number depicts quantity.
The Bottom Number
The bottom number in a time signature tells you the type of beat we need to count in each bar. The bottom number depicts QUALITY.
In the time signatures above, the number below is “4”, and the number “4” represents crotchets. Therefore, in Grade 1 ABRSM Theory Exam, we only count crotchets.
