In this lesson, we're going to explore what is API and go through a little more detail on the safe process. So PII stands for program increment. program increment is sort of the equivalent of a sprint in our agile Scrum language, if you will, since it says this is as safe as for bigger programs, a program increment encompasses five iterations within it. It's actually four to six, but typically, it's five iterations within it. So each iteration, you can think about it as a single sprint. each iteration is two weeks long.

And we'll go through more details in a future lesson to kind of talk about what is in each iteration. But for now, if we can basically just kind of remember that program increment is kind of your programming unit as as we had spent in in Scrum, if you will, and each iteration, as I mentioned is two weeks long. So let's go through the safe process next. If you remember from the scrum lessons, the process that we had for Scrum is basically we had a product backlog from the product backlog we used to have before we began a sprint. Each sprint basically took some of the stories from the product backlog and that became the sprint backlog. And then the team worked on the sprint backlog and then at the end of the sprint, you looked at what stories were completed and what in what were not completed the ones that were not completed go back into the product backlog.

So you started with a product backlog. So similarly, in save what we have is basically since this is kind of it at a portfolio level, if you will, again the four levels that we have is portfolio value stream program level and then we have the key level. So, at the very first stage we have the portfolio level, which is the organization strategy on the pinions. So, the types of stories that you have or the types of epics you have at this level is what is the organizational strategy the strategic goals of the company people. So, those ideas are epics, if you will, are part of your backlog to begin with, you have konban filtration to see which ones that mean we are going to be working on and from that, we get the portfolio backlog. So, we have the organizational strategy and from the organizational strategy we Which which has in the form of ideas or ethics and then from that we basically filter we have kind of combine proliferation or basically filter screen which ones should become part of your portfolio backlog.

Next we have from the portfolio backlog, we get to the next level again we filter out which ones that we need to include at the value stream level. So, now at this level you have value stream backlog. You probably can see that how this is going, the next one you have to go through which ones are going to make it to the next level of save which is the program level and that becomes your program backlog. At the value stream levels. The epics are called capabilities at the program level the epics are called features. And then finally, the the next one basically for the team level It gets to the PCI objective on the program increment objectives, if you will, and that from from this backlog from the PCI backlog, you you get to the team backlog.

So, this is kind of the different process you start from again, you start from the organization strategy, strategic goals, the people these are the themes and then from that you build a portfolio backlog based on you know, screening, filtration if you will combine filtration to see which ones are important for taking it in as a portfolio. So, that becomes a portfolio backlog from that you you create which stories are which epics from the portfolio backlog are going to become part of the value stream backlog. And then the next level you filter out on you see which stories or epics would make it to the program backlog and then from the program backlog, you basically get you know, you have like a one to two days planning ceremony and you create your objectives from your objectives backlog. The team takes the different stories, if you will to make it to their backlog for each team, if you will, and then they work through the poi iterations if you will the five iterations that I mentioned previously to get through these different stories, and in the next lesson, we are going to talk more about the poi process.
