Transition: a&nbsp;change from one shot or video clip to the next.
Cut: a shot ends abruptly without any overlap with the following shot.
Dissolve: the first shot becomes more and more transparent while the following shot becomes more and more visible as they overlap.
Wipe: when the first shot is pushed off the screen to make way for the next shot to arrive.
Fade: the shot appears from a black screen fade-in or the image fades slowly to black fade-out.
