There's this thing called attentional misdirection and inattentional blindness that are covered in a couple of researches that go in-depth as to what occurs in our brain when we try to do a specific task while paying attention to multiple things simultaneously. The monkey business illusion by Daniel J. Simons illustrates that perfectly. Look it up on youtube, and read a little about it too. You’ll get great scientific insight on what actually happens to us when we are engaged in an effort demanding task and taking advantage of that knowledge can make you a better performer.
Magicians use misdirection in order to masquerade certain things that they do. If you see a magician's move it was probably put in the presentation intentionally to mislead you or to make you think that you saw something when in reality nothing happened or something else completely different happened.
