One of the biggest hurdles I had to go through when I was learning magic, other than getting good information, was trying to do a trick that I had just failed. What that means is that whenever I learned something new I got really excited, and instead of practicing and polishing a routine, I tried to copy what I was seeing, copying the moves, copying the words, copying the jokes, copying the whole speech, everything was mimicked. 
And at first, when you're learning something, that's a great way to do it. But one fundamental principle in anything you do in life, at least for me, is, the more you do it the more it becomes your own. So as I just read the other day, practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.
