So, one of the things I bring to this course is a background where I wasn't good at it, but I studied Shaolin Kung Fu with Lauren, my sense I my, my dojo Master, and it was about preparing to fight. I wasn't very good at Shaolin Kung Fu, but Lauren, all hundred and 29 pounds of them, help us learn how to spar and practice fighting. So in some ways, this is about practicing this course about practicing fighting before you need it. So he would have me practice fighting with a great big six foot three police officer who was taking the course. He was a two time Golden Glove championship once at 19. And once in his mid 20s, to different weight groups.
This guy had longer arms, longer legs. I thought Ellie do is put his hand out I wouldn't be able to even get close to Lee put his hand on my head. But Lauren said no, we're practicing. We're play fighting. Nobody's supposed to get hurt. You're supposed to throw blocks.
Supposed to throw punches. When we touch each other, not hurt each other. So that philosophy of practicing for an event before it happened, opened my eyes that by practicing the skills of Shaolin Kung Fu, the breathing skills, the calming skills, they were very good at getting me to practice it. But they didn't give me language to transfer the skills. They didn't give me a model of physical, emotional and intellectual. So I'm borrowing from them, in part, because it ties in closely with the research from the US on frightened flight.
It ties into the relaxation response research. There's the ancient wisdom of Fortune 5000 years ago, Harvard Medical School information is from the 19 teens through the 1960s ongoing, so they both worked so well together. And I wanted to do it in a way that three year olds and 37 year olds and 97 year olds going through life's ultimate big stuff events that go Oh, I'm not going crazy. Nope, they're going through big stuff. You're flickering, you're fencing, you're flopping, you're flowing, you're going through all the stuff doesn't make you crazy. And just maybe along the way, some of us are more of us, stay safer and ask for help as required.
That's why I do it.
