DESCRIPTION: Both words are translated as to know, but they mean to know in two different ways. Kennen means that you know who someone/something is, that you are familiar with him/her/it:

Ich Kenne Jakob.= I have seen him before, I know who he is.
Ich Kenne Berlin.= I know Berlin ‒ I have been there before.

Wissen means you have knowledge of a certain fact:

Ich weiß, wo er wohnt.= I know where he lives.
Ich weiß nicht Warum.= I don’t know why.

Don‘t mix up kennen and können. They sound very similar, but können means can:

Jakob kann fliegen.= Jakob can fly.
