DESCRIPTION:
All the expressions on the above mentioned basically mean hello, but you can see that there is a great deal of regional variation. If you want to be geographically neutral you have to say hello (which works both for people you say du or sie to, so this one is very handy).
The following two are also geographically neutral and du/sie neutral:guten Morgen good morning.guten Abend good evening.
Although it sounds a bit like Morgen (morning) you can use more or moin moin all day. But only inthe north of Germany.
To say goodbye, you use.• tschüssgeographically neutral and du/Sie neutral.• Auf Wiedersehengeographically neutral, but only with Sie.• Servusonly in Bavaria and Austria and only with du; note that servus also can be used as hello, but again only in Bavaria and Austria and only with du.
