Section 4: Putting your best Foot Forward

Elaine L. Orr

As you might expect, the best way to make a good impression is to take the time to prepare a high-quality story. That includes the story itself, the quality of proofreading, adherence to the magazine's format instructions, and perhaps most important a solid cover letter. Submission guidelines will indicate format (margins, double spacing, etc.) They will generally also advise including a cover letter, what it should touch on, and whether it should be separate from the story or article or included in the same electronic file. The lessons in this section will cover:

  • Ideas for proofreading your story
  • Approach to a cover letter
  • An additional word of advice If the magazine or journal says they prefer electronic format, do that
  • The high-quality bond paper you use for a cover letter may be very professional, but electronic submissions are easier for editors to work with
